Introducing Lumiere, a revolutionary device that seamlessly combines a bedside lamp and an advanced audio system to transform your sleep experience.
Why did we think about it?
Circadian rhythms are 24-hour cycles that are part of the body’s internal clock, running in the background to carry out essential functions and processes.
Research is also revealing that circadian rhythms play an integral role in diverse aspects of physical and mental health
62%
62% of the individuals globally sleep less than 8 hours each night.
65%
65% individuals have difficulty sleeping and waking up on time
33%
33% of the individuals globally have one or the other sleep disorder which affects their mental and physical health
Circadian rhythm is disturbed by
When properly aligned, a circadian rhythm can
promote consistent and restorative sleep.
But
When this circadian rhythm is thrown off, it can create significant sleep problems, including insomnia.
Irregular sleep patterns
Changing your sleep timings, Eg sleeping late on weekends and early on weekdays
Overnight work schedule
Working and sleeping late is harmful even if you sleep for 8 hours or more
Using electronic devices before sleeping
Using electronic devices as the last activity before sleeping affects sleep
Spending too much time indoors
Spending the whole day indoor especially with artificial lights on impacts sleep
Eating habits
Eating habits such as having dinner close to bed time worsens sleep
Effect of light on sleep
1.
Light Sensitivity
The circadian clock is highly sensitive to light around 2 hours before bedtime, throughout the night, and shortly after waking up
2.
Role of sunlight
The natural light/dark cycle from the sun strongly influences the circadian rhythm, regulating sleep, wakefulness, and alertness
3.
Light Optimization
Increased daylight exposure boosts alertness, while darkening the bedroom at night promotes melatonin production
Effect of sound on sleep
White noise
White noise helps soothe background sounds such as honking, barking, loud neighbours etc by creating a constant background noise.
Pink Noise
Pink noise is a mix of high and low frequencies, like
the sound of failing rain or gentle ocean waves,
making it soft and calming.
Brown noise
Brown noise gets its name from Brownian motion, the random and speedy movement of particles in liquid. It sounds dampened compared to white noise
Blue noise
The energy of blue noise is at the high-frequency
end, with very few deep tones to balance it out. It
does a great job of heavily masking outside noises.
Effect of colour on body clock
How can we solve it?
Project goal : To create a device which helps to maintain a circadian clock for the body and improves the sleep cycle of users.
Idea 1
Inducing sleep through light, by changing the colour of the light according to the sunrise and sunset times. Eg starting with white then transitioning to orange at night
Idea 2
Inducing sleep through sounds, by playing sleep sounds such as white noise, brown noise, etc.
Idea 3
Alarm clock to wake up on time, as the sun rises and the colour of light starts to change, alarm wakes up the user on time.
Idea 4
Nature sounds to start the day, now as we wake up by the alarm and lights, nature sounds play to start the day.
Conceptualisation
Prototyping
The product is made of Teak wood and White PLA plastic. Teak wood is used to give it a homely feeling and make it a part of the home decor. The white coloured box gives a sense of peace, wholeness and completion.
